Western Red Cedar

WESTERN RED CEDAR – It is the ideal wood for an external facade, naturally resistant to biodegradation and pests. Western Red Cedar wood can be freely used in harsh weather conditions and can be left untreated taking on a unique silver-grey effect.
Cedar also has excellent acoustic and insulating properties, which guarantees its full utility as a material used as a wooden facade

• Western Red Cedar (WRC) – is one of the lightest wood species available in commercial quantities.
• A density of 330-390 kg/m3 and a very low shrinkage factor make Canadian Cedar an excellent wood that is resistant to cracking, warping and the breaking of metal fasteners
• WRC is classified as Class 2 for resistance to decay processes and, according to BS 8417, can remain unprotected for 60 years due to the density of natural compounds in the wood that destroy fungal spores
• it is advisable to impregnate WRC if you wish to maintain the natural colouring of the species or use the wood in an environment where air pollutants may adversely affect the appearance and condition of unprotected wood
• the low density of WRC and the high proportion of air in the wood structure make it an excellent thermal insulator, the best of all low-density wood species, known as softwood, incomparably better than brick, concrete or steel. Using Cedar for the exterior facade helps keep the heat in winter and insulates the hot air in summer
• as with all wood, in order to avoid corrosion, metal fasteners should be used only in aluminium, stainless steel or deep galvanised
